FOCUS

Niger State, like most other states in Nigeria, is experiencing continuing urbanisation. Although the State is still predominantly rural, it is also experiencing a rapid urban transition. In 1976 when Niger State was created, it was made up of mainly dispersed agrarian settlements. As of 1979, only four settlements, namely Minna, Bida, Kontagora and Suleja, were classified as urban centres, each of which now has a population of at least 150,000 persons.
